Can knowledgeable folks here explain how Bitcoin can (and will need to) evolve for a quantum computing world? How much pain will it be for users and holders, and how should we prepare for it today? What steps are being taken by the community to prepare for the advent of quantum computing?

Quantum computing is coming. It may be a few decades away, or it could be just 2-3 years away. And attacking bitcoin will be an attractive target whenever it arrives, and we will need to prepare for it.
