PayPal auto buying of bitcoin

Can one have an ongoing buy in of $100/ month of bitcoin and just keep accumulating it and see any good become of it or does one need to continually be buying low and selling high day to day to see any real profits? I have about $5000 invested and it seems like more times than not the actual worth is less than I have invested.
